Question by Ian: Does hosting in a foreign country have an impact on SEO?If I host in USA, would it make affect UK rankings?
Rackspace suggested using the UK based datacentre would be better for SEO for a UK based site. Is this true or would hosting in the USA be just as good for SEO? Does the server location make any difference?

This would be something that is difficult to test due to the nature of the Internet. So keep in mind that we don’t have definitive information (such as a test case) to reference. It has been suggested in the SEO (Search Engine Optimization) community that a server’s location may possibly affect your regional rankings in Google – which makes sense.

For Example: if you have a site based in the USA with a .com ending that describes something in the UK, having your site hosted IN the UK with a .co.uk domain most likely will increase your relevance in google.co.uk rankings.

As a good rule of thumb, great sites make for great rankings.

So take the time, get a content person fully in charge of this to create and frequently post different content for the UK site that is tailored for that region. You can even do UK based advertising if the site is made in such a way that would not take away from its functionality.

Most SEO ideology is really just common sense when you think back on it. Of COURSE its better to have something in the market where people are looking for it. The hard part is IDENTIFYING the market and targeting it.

Best of luck

Does changing webhost affect SSL and/or Dedicated IP Address?

-

Question by questioner: Does changing webhost affect SSL and/or Dedicated IP Address?
So, I host my SSL, IP Address and website at a single entity. Now, I’d like to move my webhosting account to a new host, however, I’d like to leave my IP Address and SSL with my exisitng host. Domain is hosted elsewhere.

Thanks for your response

SSL certificate moves with server name https://www.example.com, regardless of hosting or ip address

IPv4 address stays with upstream provider, usually.

Forward DNS doesn’t matter. The only way you can get a reverse lookup is from your upstream provider (who provides the IP address and connectivity)
