Question by Tyler W: Virtual PC 04/07 problem?
I have tried virtual pc 2004 and 2007. When I am done making a virtual machine and I run it says there is not enough memory on the host. I checked the specifications and the memory is fine. What is wrong? Is there another program that can run other OSes?

Best answer:

Answer by philby
Hard to say this without stating the obvious, but you don’t have enough memory on your pc to run a virtual pc with the settings you have specified.
When you create a new VPC, you have to specify how much memory you want to devote to it. When you run VPC if there isn’t enough memory to run it AND continue running your current OS, you get that error message.
It happens to me on my old pc if I’m running a few programs, then try to fire up my Win2K3 VPC, then I have to close some apps to get it working.
When you run VPC, it tries to “reserve” an amount of memory eqaul to your specified amount when you created it, if it cannot reserve that much memory, you get the error you mentioned.
The resolutions are…
1. Get more memory
2. Free up more memory by closing apps before you run VPC
3. Reduce the amount of memory required by your virtual machine
4. Have a look at apps like “Guest PC”, “iEmulator” and “Wintel” they probbaly won’t resolve your memory issues though!

Question by don: Network ID, Host ID, IP Address, Default Gateway and Subnet mask?

http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/3415/network0b.jpg

According to the Image:-

“IP Address: Unique Device (host) Address.”
What is a host?

“Default Gateway: IP Address of the Router on the Same Physical Segment”
What is a Physical Segment?

Best answer:

Answer by Tim the Tech
A host is a device that is using the IP address, like your PC or laptop.

Same Physical Segment in a nutshell means that it is in the same IP range as your host, so if your IP address is 192.168.10.100 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 then in order to be in the same physical segment your router would need to have an address of 192.168.10.X.
This could get really in depth if we start explaining subnets etc., but in short form when a subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 it means that any device that wants to communicate with it must have an IP address that matches the first 3 sets of numbers. A subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 means that it only has to match the first 2 sets of numbers (in this example 192.168.X.X) and 255.0.0.0 only needs to be in the 192.X.X.X range.
Hope this helps

Is there some sort of virtual PC softwares (such as VirtualBox, MS Virtual PC, etc.) in which the guest’s OS is the host’s OS itself? Meaning, I don’t have to create a Virtual Machine and install a new OS.

I know I can install the same OS on a Virtual PC but I just want to use the Virtual PC software’s feature of being able to control to Windows at a time. So it’s something like running two user accounts at the same time instead of two OS (i.e., host and guest) at a time.

(I can’t use Virtual PC softwares because they don’t support 3d acceleration. VirtualBox does, but I can’t find the solution online to bypass the “Windows Logo Testing” problem. Most online posts I see also tell me that 3d acceleration cannot [yet] be stably emulated by virtual machines.)

Answer by Kevin B.
Macs do it all the time, its called an admin account. You use expose to switch between accounts but both remain constant in the RAM. so theres no loggging in and out, you just sort of switch between them, or run them both at the same time if you have 2 monitors.

as far as I know there are no PC equivalents. Macs have better hardware acceleration.

description: I have a usb graphic tablet for which there’s no Vista/7 drivers and older ones don’t work.
(latest drivers support XP)

hyphothesis: If I run XP in VirtualBox or VMware I can use the tablet there! As simple as that, how wonderful.

problem: So I run either VB or VM and no matter what I do, the XP inside doesn’t “see” the tablet. Nothing like “new hardware found” popup, nothing in hardware manager.

question: What should I do? Is it even possible to “forward” the usb into a virtual machine and use its drivers instead of the host ones?

Best answer:

Answer by PhonicUK
This is an option in VirtualBox. You have to go into the VM configuration and enable USB Host Support.

Also: It is important that when you start your VM that the tablet is *unplugged*, you must not plug it in until the VM is started and ready. You may have to use the USB menu (Bottom right of the VM display, little USB icon, right click it) to pick the device you want to use.

Question by Derrick E: installing Ubuntu 7 on Virtual PC 2007. mouse won’t work??
My host OS is windows vista so i downloaded virtual pc 2007 and installed xp pro on it. that works fine.
but i installed Ubuntu after i installed xp and my mouse doesnt work on it. also, the first time i booted it the graphics were screwy so i had to boot in “safe graphics mode” but it didnt look like the mouse did anything when the graphics were screwy. i am on a laptop if that makes any difference.
Ok i installed virtual box like you said and it works fine, the problem is now that i can run ubuntu off the disc but the screen isnt big enough to navigate the menus to install it! ive tried all resolution settings i cant scroll down… any more ideas?

Best answer:

Answer by snakeeyes
Hi, I am not really sure about how Virtual PC’s Linux support is.

I would suggest u install virtual box from:

http://www.virtualbox.org

Just in case did u make the correct settings for the Linux system, Ubuntu uses Linux kernel 2.6.22 or 2.6 for short.

Good Luck!

Question by : How do I set up a windows 7 Virtual box in linux?
I keep geting this error message:The virtual machine execution may run into an error condition as described below. We suggest that you take an appropriate action to avert the error.

The host I/O cache for at least one controller is disabled and the medium ‘/home/****/.VirtualBox/HardDisks/Win7.vdi’ for this VM is located on an ext4 partition. There is a known Linux kernel bug which can lead to the corruption of the virtual disk image under these conditions.

Either enable the host I/O cache permanently in the VM settings or put the disk image and the snapshot folder onto a different file system.

Best answer:

Answer by ratter_of_the_shire
“Either enable the host I/O cache permanently in the VM settings or put the disk image and the snapshot folder onto a different file system.”

I’m not sure what filesystems do work, you can check the VM forums. The I/o option is found under settings>storage.

That message isn’t and error. It’s a warning about a potential future error.

To get it going you need to attach the install DVD to the V-machine, again Settings>storage, and select or add a optical drive, and thing set it to the Win7 disk in your optical drive. Then the last thing to check is settings>system and enable booting from the CD, and place it first in the boot order. Click Okay, then start your virtual machine. It should boot up into a windows installation environment. Your left alt or crtl (i forgot wich) will unbind our mouse from the virtualized OS window. (After installation make sure to unmount the installation cd)

What do you think? Answer below!

Thanks for your response

Best answer:

Answer by adaviel
SSL certificate moves with server name https://www.example.com, regardless of hosting or ip address

IPv4 address stays with upstream provider, usually.

Forward DNS doesn’t matter. The only way you can get a reverse lookup is from your upstream provider (who provides the IP address and connectivity)

Hi,
I’d like to know if Microsoft virtual PC can run windows xp sp2 inside a host OS of Windows vista?
I was going through the website http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=en

it says you can install windows xp sp3 as guest OS, was wondering if installing xp sp2 would be a problem using MS Virtual pc ….?

Best answer:

Answer by Sandy G
You can run any version of XP in a VPC guest. The only problem might be trying to use the OS that came bundled in your old system and the setup code wouldn’t work.

Do count up RAM, though. Some Vista systems come with barely enough RAM to boot, and virtual PCs do not give back assigned RAM when idle.
