How can I make my web site visible to the world?

-

Question by Aaron Escobar: How can I make my web site visible to the world?
Ok, I have an Apache set up on my computer with virtual hosting (so I can use my own domains and my custom top-level domains) but my web site is only visible to computers connected to my network. How can I get out of my network and make my web site visible to the world? Do I need to register a public IP address or domain?

How to make shared folder in virtual box with Windows 7 as host and Ubuntu as guest?

Question by Hunting Hound: How to make shared folder in virtual box with Windows 7 as host and Ubuntu as guest?
I tried… but… its hopeless. T.T … there’s no exact tutorial for that except with Ubuntu as host and win7 as guest( that ain’t what I want).

Answer by Nahum
If your Win7 account isn’t password-protected, add one. Windows doesn’t use network shares unless one of the accounts has a password.

Once this is done, the Public folders should show up on the Network, along with any other folders you set up using the Properties > Sharing tab.

Tips on Virtual Hosting

-

Article by Stella Pike

Developing a website is not such a tough task but yes, maintenance requires lot of potential and hard work. It is costly as well as time-consuming for individuals and small and large scale companies. Just having a website is meaningless until someone visits it. So to let your website accessible to all thru internet, all you need is server where you can store all the information found in your website.

Running a server with continues internet is the far most tedious and complicated job. You need to hunt for a reliable web hosting company that can help you in the right direction. Virtual hosting is one of the options in web hosting among starters. It costs very less.

Virtual hosting:
It is the process of running multiple “virtual” web servers on a single physical host computer. Virtual hosting allows you to host multiple domains on one server. In such a hosting technique, just pay off the rent for space on server and get all the benefits of it. This technique is often used by the web hosting provider as it allows better scalability, efficiency and manageability. Hosting providers recommend packages with special combinations of domain names allowed with each hosting account, disk space, and bandwidth allocations.

Virtual hosting is also known as “shared hosting” as it permits you to share features of server with other domains. Basically there are two types of virtual web hosting i.e. IP-based and name-based. In name-based hosting, single IP-address is used to host each website whereas in IP-based technique, each website is given its own IP-address. Name-based virtual hosting is possible for the websites that do not have any specific security requirements.

In virtual hosting, the loading time of webpage depends on other websites sharing that server. That is why it is mostly preferred for the small website. Each web site has its personal OS on the “virtual” hosting server with a remote segment of disk space.

Advantages:
Low price.
Client doesn’t have to manage the server.

Disadvantages:
Overcrowded servers: Common problems faced by most of the web hosting company.
Security issues: Hosting more sites is not as secure as dedicated server.
Neighborhood related problems.

The cost of virtual hosting is very less as compared to the dedicated server. Such hosting is ideal for the low and small sized websites. Conclusion is that virtual hosting is more preferred as its advantages overweigh its disadvantages.

Virtual PC is a Way to run Separate Virtual Hard Drives for you to test applications and even learn systems
You will need at Least 2 Gig To run Virtual PC on your System, even with a Very Good Syst5wm, and ideally 4 Gig or More.
Microsoft even provides downloadable Virtual Hard Drives.
Virtual PC is a Downloadable System install, and currently there are two version some cater more for Pre Vista and Server 2003 versions, one is specifically for Vista and higher versions, and this needs more Ram.
This gives you a good place to start:

Is there a way to access the files of my host os in a virtual machine?

-

Question by Broseph: Is there a way to access the files of my host os in a virtual machine?
I am using Microsoft Virtual Machine 2007. M os is Win XP Pro SP3, and my guest os is Win7 Ultimate. Is there a way for me to access the files on my real harddrive in the Win7 virtual machine?
for some reason, virtual machine additions isn’t installing

Answer by Nick T
Shared folders can be set up only on a running virtual machine on which Virtual Machine Additions is installed.

When creating a shared folder, you must assign it a drive letter that is not already being used by a drive or device in the virtual machine operating system. If two drives or devices are assigned to the same drive letter, the shared folder will not appear in the virtual machine operating system.

Open Virtual PC Console.

If the virtual machine is not running, click the virtual machine that you want to run, and then click Start.

In Virtual PC Console, click the virtual machine on which you want to share a folder, and then click Settings.

Click Shared Folders and then click Share Folder.

In Browse for Folder, select the folder or volume you want to share. To select a different drive, click the arrow next to the Drive box, and then click the drive.

To share the folder every time the virtual machine starts, click Share every time.

Notes
To open Virtual PC Console, on the host operating system, click Start, point to All Programs or Programs, and then click Microsoft Virtual PC.

Virtual PC supports sharing of all volume formats, including hard disks, CDs, and zip disks.

You can also open Settings from the Edit menu of a Virtual Machine window.

A folder of the host operating system may be shared by multiple virtual machines simultaneously.

How can I to get Virtual Machine Additions to work?

-

Question by Phosphorus: How can I to get Virtual Machine Additions to work?
I installed Virtual Machine Additions on my XP virtual machine with Vista Ultimate as a host. It was installed under my Administrator account. Before I installed it, although it wouldn’t be at it’s fullest potential, I would get adequate video performance, running at 1024x768x32. After I installed, it went down to 800x600x4! I also can’t integrate the mouse, and the sound is somewhat distorted sometimes. Any suggestions?
