No big deal, usually only means the server was very busy at the time of failed connection and for you to try back in a few minutes.

Is it possible to install a VPS software on Amazon Web Services, such as EC3?

Question by : Is it possible to install a VPS software on Amazon Web Services, such as EC3?
I want to install a Virtual Private Server on Amazon Web Services so that I can host multiple sites from one account and scale them independently. Is this possible and if so, where can i find out more?

Network

VPSLink is in Seattle, inside Spry’s own data centre. Network performance has been great around the clock, and there has not been any downtime that has been detected (polling at 5 minutes interval).

But you know what is good about hosting in Seattle? Three words — Amazon Web Services. Amazon is also in Seattle, and if you are a heavy user of services like Amazon S3, or want a static IP front-end for your fleet of Amazon EC2 slaves, the latency and bandwidth between your servers and Amazon can make a huge difference.

Check out these benchmarks.

any BOOT MANAGERS (Linux) that will let me boot an installation on external drive or external/internal CD/DVD.

Question by Communitybuilder: any BOOT MANAGERS (Linux) that will let me boot an installation on external drive or external/internal CD/DVD.
Perhaps a light version of Linux itself? Any virtual host that can do this without a lot of overhead?

I would say that you would have to go into the BIOS, by hitting Del, F1 or the key indicated on the start screen, then select advanced settings and changing the boot order.

NEVER use windows based servers on public networks.

Linux/Unix packet handling and DNS systems are far better…

I have never had a Linux server compromised (VPN wrapper helps.)

Virtual PC with WIN 98 LAN question.?

-

Question by jtpurdom: Virtual PC with WIN 98 LAN question.?
Here is the situation:

I have a small LAN at work consisting of PCs running Windows XP and 98 (to support legacy software).

I am trying to run win 98SE on Microsoft’s Virtual PC 2007.

I have 98 installed on the VPC. I configured the host PC to share its internet connection with the windows loopback adapter. Under VPC network settings, the 98 virtual PC uses NAT as adapter 1 and the loopback adapter as adapter 2. This configuration allowed me to connect to the internet, and I could see my host PC as a network connection.

Since its windows 98, I used the winXP disk to try to connect it to my LAN. However, after restarting my computer, I couldn’t even get on the internet anymore… even though none of the setting had changed.

Does anyone have a clue what is going on or how to fix it?
Thanks, but that is not the answer. Te host PC was not effected by the XP disk. It never lost connectivity… just the Virtual computer did.

Unfortunately, not all programs can be run with compatibility mode. XP does not use a real edition of DOS… just a simulation. The program I need to run needs to run on a true MS-DOS capable OS. (Yes, I have tried installing DOS 7.1 on the VM, but I can’t network that either)

Answer by mrjaw14
the XP disk modified the settings on the host PC. Double check all the network settings on the PC. you may have to use the network connection wizard to create small home or office network.

from there make sure that the host PC can do everything, then adjust the network settings on the MV and you might have to run that XP networking disk again with some different options.

PS. have you tried to run legacy programs in compatability mode from within XP so you don’t have to run win 98? most programs will work in XP if ran under compatability mode.

hope this helps

Virtual Box with 512 RAM?

-

Question by Anar I: Virtual Box with 512 RAM?
Hi, can anyone tell me if I can use Virtual Box with only 512 RAM? I got XP as a host OS and I’d like to go for Ubuntu at the same time. I heard that it’s necessary to have at least 1G of memory but not quite sure about it. My startup items are quite few so I don’t push my RAM pretty much. Please help me to figure this thing out, I need to know if it’s worth it to install Virtual Box on my laptop.
Thx in advance

Answer by Sean R
The more ram the better.

IF your computer only has 512 ram and you want to specify some of that to your virtual box, it will be slow while your running the virtual session.

Spend 20 bucks and get 1 gb ram stick from newegg.com
