Question by John: How do I redirect an IP address?
The Problem: An application we lost the source code to needs to be moved from one MS SQL server to a different one. The two servers have two different IP addresses. Now if we could find a way to make any connection to 10.128.1.1 go to 10.129.2.1 we wouldn’t have to rewrite the program and all would be good in programming land. This solution would have to consist of a patch made to a Windows XP local machine. We can not modify any DNS settings.

I know you can use the “host” file to redirect names to IP addresses locally but we need IP to IP redirection.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Those are both great answers but here is another problem, I can’t modify the settings of the MS SQL server, so the ip redirection would have to be done on the client side. So when the client needs to run the software and the software trys to connection to the old SQL server the request is redirected on that clint machine to the new IP address of the new SQL server. Kinda like how the “host” file works only for IP addresses. Thanks!

Can’t you just use the multi-homing feature of Windows?

Just use the network connections properties and on the advanced TCP/IP properties just define both addresses.

You might need to reconfigure the router(s) depending on your setup.

If the box is still needed on the old IP address look at some of the port forwarding software and use that to redirect all MS SQL traffic to the correct box.
